COB vs SMD LED Strip: Which One Should You Choose?
If you are sourcing LED strip lights for a project, you have probably hit the same fork in the road that every buyer faces: COB or SMD?
Both are flexible LED strips. Both are mass-produced in millions of meters every month. Both will light up a cove, a display case, or a sign. But they are engineered differently, look different on the wall, and suit different jobs.
This guide compares them side by side — from the LED chips themselves to real-world application — so you can spec the right strip the first time. If you are a wholesaler, contractor, or lighting designer, this is the decision framework we use with our own OEM/ODM customers at our 10,000 m² factory.

What Is an SMD LED Strip?
SMD stands for Surface-Mount Device. An SMD LED strip has individual, pre-packaged LED components soldered onto a flexible PCB at regular intervals.
Because each LED is a discrete component, you can always see a slight gap between the light sources. That is why SMD strips produce the familiar "string of lights" look — perfectly fine when the strip is hidden in an aluminum profile, but noticeable when it is exposed.
Strengths of SMD strips
Lower cost per meter — the most budget-friendly option for large runs.
Proven and widely available — every supplier carries them; replacement and expansion are simple.
Wide color range — RGB and RGBIC SMD strips are common for color effects.
Flexible brightness options — you can pick different chip densities to hit your lumen target.
Limitations
Visible dots and hotspots at close range.
RGB color mixing is imperfect up close — you can sometimes see red, green, and blue as separate points.
When installed in a visible location, SMD strips usually require a diffuser or profile to look clean.
What Is a COB LED Strip?
COB stands for Chip-on-Board. Instead of soldering packaged LEDs, bare LED chips are mounted directly onto the board and covered with a phosphor layer, creating one continuous, unbroken line of light.
The result is the defining feature of COB: no visible dots. The strip looks like a single glowing line — often described as "dot-free" or "shadow-free" lighting.
Strengths of COB strips
Dot-free appearance — the closest thing to a continuous light line; ideal for visible, exposed installations.
High chip density — up to 840 chips per meter in our COB series, giving smooth, even brightness even at tight viewing distances.
Better color mixing — because the chips are so close together, RGB and tunable white versions blend cleanly.
Efficient thermal management — bare chips on the PCB dissipate heat well, which supports longer service life in enclosed profiles.
Cut-friendly — still cuttable at marked intervals, with 3M VHB adhesive for fast installation.
Limitations
Higher cost per meter than equivalent SMD strips.
Fewer suppliers make them well — quality varies a lot between factories (chip sourcing, phosphor coating, and binning all matter).
COB vs SMD: Real-World Comparison
1. Light Appearance (the deciding factor for most projects)
This is the fastest way to decide:
If the strip will be hidden (inside an aluminum channel, behind a diffuser, under a shelf) → SMD is usually enough, and you save money.
If the strip will be seen (exposed cove lighting, edge-lit signs, furniture accent lines) → choose COB. The dot-free line is dramatically cleaner.
2. Brightness and Efficiency
Don't compare "chips per meter" alone — compare lumens and the LED chip grade.
A high-quality COB strip at 576–840 chips/m produces smooth, high-brightness output with even light distribution. SMD strips achieve high brightness with fewer, larger chips. For the same lumen output, SMD is generally cheaper, but COB gives you the smooth finish at higher densities.
For your spec sheet, always ask the supplier for: lumens per meter (lm/m), CRI, color temperature, and chip brand — these matter far more than the marketing name.
3. Color and Tunable White
RGB SMD is the classic choice for color effects and addressable (RGBIC) projects — mature, cheap, and controllable.
RGB COB gives cleaner color mixing and a premium look, ideal where the strip is visible.
For CCT tunable white (2700K–6500K adjustability), COB with high-density chips mixes warm and cool white much more evenly.
4. Bending and Installation
Both types bend well for coves and corners. COB strips with chips laid edge-to-edge can achieve tighter visual continuity around corners. Both use 3M VHB adhesive and are cuttable at marked points — always cut at the marked intervals to keep the circuit intact.
5. Waterproofing
Both COB and SMD are available in:
IP20 (bare, for interior/dry areas)
IP65 (silicone coating, splash-resistant)
IP67/IP68 (fully sealed, for outdoor or wet areas)
Choose the IP rating based on the installation environment, not the LED type.
Which One Should You Choose?
Choose SMD when:
The strip will be hidden behind a profile or diffuser.
Budget per meter is the priority.
You need simple RGB/RGBIC color effects.
The project is large and cost-sensitive (retail chain rollouts, signage).
Choose COB when:
The strip is visible and must look premium (architectural coves, display cases, cabinetry).
You need dot-free illumination close to the light source.
You want clean tunable-white or RGB color mixing.
Your client values the finished look over a few cents per meter.
Short version: hidden → SMD. Visible → COB. Both → stock both and offer your customers the choice.
Sourcing Tips from a Factory Perspective
As a manufacturer since 2017 with a 10,000 m² facility and 500,000 meters of monthly output, here is what we tell every buyer:
Ask for a sample before any bulk order. Light quality cannot be judged from photos. Test the strip against your intended diffuser or profile.
Check the LED chip brand and binning. The same "COB 576" from different factories can differ hugely in brightness and color consistency.
Verify CRI and color temperature tolerance. For display and architectural work, demand CRI ≥ 90 and a tight CCT tolerance.
Confirm voltage and cut intervals. 12V and 24V strips cut at different intervals — match them to your power layout.
Ask about OEM/ODM. Custom lengths, voltages, CRI, color temperatures, waterproofing grades, packaging, and private labeling are all available from a factory-direct partner.
COB or SMD? The Bottom Line
There is no universal "better" — there is only the right strip for the job.
SMD = the workhorse. Cheap, proven, perfect when hidden.
COB = the premium finish. Dot-free, smooth, worth the extra cost when seen.
